Visit Donegal, and Open the
Gateway to the Laurel Highlands

Donegal, PA - By Linda Harkcom

Some people know it as home. Others know it as a turnpike exit. But anyone who has vacationed there for a week or weekend, knows this sleepy little town in the foothills of Southwestern Pennsylvania as the Gateway to the Laurel Highlands. All the sites, sounds, tastes and adventures Donegal has to offer keeps them coming back again and again.

On average, over 10,000 cars a day pass through the Donegal area. Visitors come to enjoy the picturesque views and dine on hearty home-made meals at the many family style restaurants. They also explore local festivals, unique shops, and see the sites such as, Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water, Living Treasures Animal Park, Ohiopyle Falls and Fort Ligonier.

The more adventuresome come to the area for its many fun-filled attractions such as biking or hiking on one of the many Rails to Trails projects, or the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. Try skiing or golfing at Seven Springs Mountain Resort or Hidden Valley Resort and white water rafting or kayaking at Ohiopyle State Park. You can spend your nights camping at one of the area's five state parks and spend the day playing games or riding the amusement rides at Caddie Shak Family Fun Park or Idlewild Park.

Another reason Donegal is so attractive to many is its close proximity to many cities. Located about an hour away from Pittsburgh, PA, Morgantown, WV, and Cumberland, MD and just over two hours from Hagerstown, MD and Martinsburg, WV makes getting away for the week or the day very convenient.
